Radio Hobbyist, Author, Family Man, Philanthropist
A radio hobbyist for almost 30 years, Eddie still maintains a strong interest in scanning and amateur radio while dabbling in SWLing and medium-wave DXing.
Eddie served three terms as the Vice President of the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club, one of the largest ham radio clubs in the country. He also spent several years on the Board of Directors and several years as Hamfest Chairman.
Eddie has been appointed as the section's Public Information Coordinator for the ARRL Hudson Division's NLI section.
Eddie's involvement with scanning goes back to the 70's when his parents bought him a Regency scanner for Christmas one year. It was during this time period that he became educated in the hobby from the folks associated with the Radio Communications Monitoring Association (RCMA). Later on Ed got involved with the North East Scanning News (NESN) and The All Ohio Scanner Club (AOSC). It was while involved with these organizations that Ed picked up an interest in writing and started to contribute to their newsletters.
From there, Chuck Gysi-N2DUP convinced Ed to write an article for Radio Shack's "in-house" magazine called RADIO and then Ed started writing for several now defunct scanner periodicals.
Currently, Ed is a staff columnist with National Communications Magazine, and authors many freelance articles for magazines such as Monitoring Times and Popular Communications.
In March of 2008 Ed's father passed away unexpectedly leaving him with the responsibilities of attending to his father's business affairs and having to explain to his toddler son where GrandPa was. Later that year he would watch the national economy crumble and watch his own county sink further in to an economic abyss. He would also endure a transfer of his job function from one county agency to another. Then, in the Spring of 2009 his grandmother passed away after a battle with MRSA.
All this left Ed with a sour taste in his mouth and what felt like the weight of the world on his shoulders. He looked around the community where he and his wife were raising their son and he didn't like what he saw. He knew if the current county government were to remain in tact that the local quality of life would continue to deteriorate and that possibly his job could be in jeopardy. Election Day was 5 to 6 months away so he went and introduced himself to the man running against the incumbent County Executive. This man is Ed Mangano. Ed (Muro) decided he would volunteer to work on the campaign of Ed Mangano.
Along with many of his co-workers, Ed made phone calls, handed out literature door to door, marched at street fairs, hosted and attended various meet & greets and fund raisers, and went around town delivering law signs. It was a long shot, but when all was said and done... in the closest election in Nassau County's history, Ed Mangano had become the new County Executive. All at the same time was fun, it was tiring, it was exciting, and it was rewarding. Only time will tell how things will turn out, but so far the appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Other interests include spending time with his family, listening to classic rock and new country music, and following the two New York Baseball teams as well as the NASCAR circuit.
